One of the reasons I moved to Detroit is that I recognized opportunity.
Los Angeles if full of restaurants, but it’s chock full of food writers, too. The Los Angeles Times, L.A. Taco, LAist, and Eater do a great job covering things there. There’s also The Infatuation (not my thing), hundreds of food influencers, and plenty of great for-hire freelance writers. As such, it felt like a near impossibility to actually break a story in LA. Though, as luck would have it, I was apparently the first person to write anything about Secret Pizza (according to the owner, Sean.)
A county with over 9 million people, thousands of great restaurants, and breaking in as a critic or food journalist felt nearly impossible. There just wasn’t enough work to go around.
Fast forward to Detroit, and there are some gaps to fill in the media coverage here.
Don’t get me wrong, Lyndsay C. Green, Serena Maria Daniels, Courtney Burk, and Melody Malosh are all fabulous and they do an amazing job. I’m proud to have them as colleagues. But Detroit just doesn’t have the small army of food writers it deserves. That’s why, occasionally, a really great restaurant falls through the cracks. Sometimes there’s a new opening that nobody is covering, and it’s a huge oversight. I have visited one such restaurant, and I’d like to share it with you.
